Financial Planning Preview Course


The Financial Planning Preview course is designed to introduce undergraduate and graduate students to career opportunities in the field of financial planning.  The course will also teach students invaluable financial planning skills and strategies.  This knowledge will benefit students throughout their lifetime, and will also position them as highly qualified hiring prospects immediately out of college.
Objectives of the Financial Planning Preview course are:
  • Raise awareness of the opportunities for a career in financial planning.
  • Provide undergraduate and graduate students with essential personal financial planning skills that will benefit students throughout their lifetime.
  • Increase hiring prospects out of school for students interested in pursuing a career in financial planning and the financial services industry.
Topics Covered:
  • Exposure to opportunities, potential earnings, and career paths as a financial advisor/financial planner.
  • What it means to be a financial planner including typical day-to-day duties and activities.
  • Important personal financial planning topics.
  • Topics include: budgeting, consumer protection laws, how to prepare a tax return, paying off credit cards and student loans, debt management and long-term savings for retirement, and other goals.
  • Regardless of their career path, these topics will also benefit participants throughout their lifetime.
  • Financial planning concepts and strategies when working with clients, such as:
  • Risk management and insurance techniques.
  • Investment planning, asset classes, asset allocation, risk assessment and security analysis.
  • Tax planning, tax minimization techniques, active income, earned income, passive income.
  • Various retirement plans such as traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401(k), and retirement goal setting.
  • Estate planning concepts such as wills, power of attorney, trusts and estate taxes.

The program is offered live-online, with all classes archived for playback on demand. Program start dates are February, June, and October. Classes generally meet two nights per week, for two hours each day, over eight weeks.
